Panchakarma
in the Ayurveda Bhavan at Rishikesh

Ayurvedic diagnosis and consultation first

Any serious application of Ayurveda must start with a proper diagnosis of the state of the three doshas. Our experienced Vaidyas use the unique tool of Nādī Vigyān - the science of Ayurvedic Pulse Reading. By taking the pulse they are able to detect imbalances in the physiology even before they develop into a disease. On the basis of the pulse diagnosis and other diagnostic measures, the Vaidyas will prescribe to you the most suitable and effective treatment plan.

Daily consultations with the ayurvedic physicians

During your stay in our Ayurveda Bhavan at Rishikesh, you will be under the care of our Vaidyas. The daily consultation will give you a good opportunity to clarify all your questions.

Consultation at the end of Panchakarma

At the end of your stay, our ayurvedic physicians will survey the success of the treatments and give you suggestions how to improve the diet and life style according to your dosha type. Additionally, you will receive recommendations for the treatments after Panchakarma with herbal food supplements and preparations, and the Rasayana treatment.

Purification and Detoxification through Panchakarma

Environmental pollution is increasingly becoming a threat to health. Polluted air, pesticides in food and dress, side-effects of medicines, noisy and hectic style of living are a burden to life – even on the verge of becoming a great danger to life itself.

The purpose of Panchakarma is the detoxification or purification of the whole body. Basically, Panchakarma is a procedure that restores the balance in the physiology through cleaning the body from toxins and undigested residues, technically called Ama in Ayurveda, that accumulate in the body channels through unnatural or harmful life habits or contaminated food and air.

The Vaidya will prescribe to you a certain sequence of treatments (Panchakarma) and, when necessary, special ayurvedic herbal preparations to achieve best results.                                                                                Back to top

Traditionally, Panchakarma is divided into three parts
  1. Purvakarma (preparative treatments), for example
    • Snehana (oleation) internal and external
    • Swedana (heat treatment)
  1. Pradhanakarma (main treatments)
    • Vāmana (emetics)
    • Virechana (purgative)
    • Basti (aenema) with oil and decoction
    • Nasya (nasal application)
    • Raktamokshan (blood-letting)
  1. Pashchatkarma (follow-up treatments)
    • Samsanjan kram (dietetic measures to restore Agni, the digestive fire)
    • Shaman kram (measures for calming body and mind)
    • Rasayana kram (promotion of vitality and immunity with special ayurvedic preparations)
In our Ayurveda Bhavan at Rishikesh we apply the standards of Classical Ayurveda as well as Keralïya Ayurveda.

Panchkarma women Treatment

All schools of medicine give special consideration to the care of women and Ayurveda too gives a deep insight to the women’s body and mind both in healthy and diseased states. Ayurvedic texts emphasize the need of specialized care for women. The women being soft and tender in constitution require great precaution and consideration during treatment.
Panchakarma therapy plays a major role in the treatment of various ailments which are affecting women physically, mentally as well as socially.
Here at the Ayurveda Bhavan we provide various specific treatments for feminine disorders like dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia, coital pain, cervical erosion and infertility etc. Vaginal douches, application of pichus, medicated vaginal wash and utter vastis etc. are being done to improve the overall health of women.

Research on Ayurveda, Panchakarma

Many hundreds of scientific studies have been published around the world about Ayurveda and Panchakarma, Yoga and Meditation. Most startling (and unique) effects of Ayurveda are in the field of prevention. In this field a study of Maharishi Ayurveda, emphasing the value of the mental techniques, such as Transcendental Meditation, has shown the immense of benefits for the individual, the society. For this reason several insurance companies decreased health insurance fees for people practicing Ayurveda.

Also in the field of actual treatment of disorders research revealed remarkable, and sometimes quite extraordinary, potential of ayurvedic preparations and ayurvedic detoxification.

In the fields of Anti-aging and Prevention: Some research results suggest that Ayurvedic prescriptions and procedures may help eliminate the so-called free-radicals from the body. Free-radicals are chemically aggressive oxidants that attack the cellular structures and cause many diseases and premature aging.

In the field of detoxification: The age-old ayurvedic concept of detoxification through Panchakarma treatment has been confirmed by several studies. One of the results showed a reduction by about 50 percent of some fat-soluble toxic occupational and agricultural chemicals (e.g. PCBs and pesticides) that are stored in the body–and known to cause disease.

Here are some examples taken from the thousands of scientific research studies on Ayurveda (for the actual results of a study please refer to the journal in which it was published):
